The Keepers of Light: A History and Working Guide to Early Photographic Processes This is arguably the best book available on alternative photographic processes. Sadly it is currently out of print, but there should be a used copy available at a good price. |
Historic Photographic Processes An excellent overview and practical introduction to several historical photographic processes. |
Primitive Photography : A Guide to Making Cameras, Lenses, and Calotypes This book discusses every aspect of making a photograph from scratch: constructing the camera and film holders, choosing and mounting lenses, and making the paper negative and print. Very detailed. Highly recommended if you are in to old processes. |
The Beginner's Guide to Pinhole Photography This is a great introduction to pinhole photography. Basic design, pinhole making, and darkroom procedure discussed. If you require something more advanced:
|
Pinhole Photography An excellent source of pinhole history and theory for the serious enthusiast.

Exploring With the Microscope: A Book of Discovery & Learning Why is this book out of print?!? This is one of the best introductions available to using a microscope, suitable for everyone from 8 and up. And for whatever reason it has recently gone out of print! If it comes back into print, or if someone lists a used copy at a reasonable price, I recommend that you pick it up. |
Guide to Microlife This is a "field guide" of sorts to microlife. It is a broad overview, and isn't intended to get the observer down to genus or species level, but you will be able to recognize most of the organisms squirming under your lens. |
If you want a more thorough system fo classifying your microlife, I suggest How to Know the Protozoa (Pictured Key Nature Series). This can get you as close as genus for many protozoa. Another very thorough guide with lots of color photos is Free-living Freshwater Protozoa: A Color Guide.
