FIELD GUIDES AND KEYS  PAGE 1  2  3
Field guides other than birds
covercoverPeterson's A Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians and the Eastern and Central edition. Hands down the best general field guides to North American herps available.
coverStalking the Wild Asparagus by Euell Gibbons. A lot of people today don't remember Euell Gibbons, or they only remember him from the 70's cereal commercial, which is a shame. He was THE wild foods expert, and his writing is highly entertaining and informative. I highly recomend that you try at least one of his books. Also in print are his Stalking the Healthful Herbs and Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop. Out of print but worth a search are his Beachcomber's Handbook, Handbook of Edible Wild Plants, and Stalking the Good Life.
coverPeterson's A Field Guide to Animal Tracks by Olaus J. Murie. A very nicely done guide to the tracks and signs of North American mammals.cover
coverMushrooms Demystified: A Comprehensive Guide to the Fleshy Fungi Not so much a field guide, but this is hands down the best guide available to the fleshy fungi of North America. Thorough and enjoyable. If you do need a field guide, I suggest one local to your area; if you happen to live in Texas, that would be Metzler's Texas Mushrooms : A Field Guide (Corrie Herring Hooks Series). Every state should have a guide this good!
coverPeterson's A Field Guide to Insects : America North of Mexico is a great general guide for identifying families of insects. Lots of detailed information and illustrations.cover
coverPeterson's Beetles : A Field Guide to the Beetles of North America is a great field guide for quick identification of beetle families. A nice first guide, but if you are a SERIOUS beetle nut you may want the MUCH more extensive (and expensive)... cover
coverAmerican Beetles, Volume I: Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga, Polyphaga: Staphyliniformia As thorough as any work on North American beetles can be (there are over 30,000 named species here). Other volumes are pending! cover
